Saturday brought us to the Menomonie Road Race. A 101 mile stage for the men and an 82 mile stage for the women. The course is a lot of rolling hills, farm fields, and tree lines narrow roads. Both races saw breaks get up the road, absorbed and new breaks on the finish circuits take the stage win. For the men Travis McCabe (Elbowz Racing p/b Boneshaker Project) sprinted for the stage win out of a late break formed as the peloton return to the final circuits. The men’s Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies team kept control of the race leaving the GC standings unchanged going into the final stage with Michael Friedman now having to show how well he can climb in Stillwater. Lauren Stephens (Team TIBCO) bridged up to Olivia Dillon (Specialized-lululemon) late in the race and keep going all the way to the circuits and the stage win by 32 seconds as Optum worked to protect Jade Wilcoxson’s (Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) leader jersey. Shelley Olds (Team TIBCO) took the field sprint for second and a precious 8 second time bonus to end up just 1 second behind Jade in the GC standings. Kimberley Wells (Colavita-Fine Cooking) rounded out the podium and now leads in the sprint jersey competition. With no time bonuses available in Stillwater it’ll be a test to see who can climb the best tomorrow.
