Dogs, Skis, and Sleds – 2013 Edition of the Snowflake Skijor and Sprint Classic

March 2nd and 3rd is the annual Snowflake Skijor and Sprint Classic held at the Snowflake Nordic Ski Center in Duluth, MN. It’s a two day dog powered event organized by the Midwest Skijorers. Each team is racing against the clock with the times from each of their runs on Saturday and Sunday added together to determine the final outcome. Here is a few photos from the Saturday racing.

Co-Main Event

John “The Nemeses” Moxey vs Harley “Sandman” Kilfian

In the co-main event we saw John Moxey come back from a couple early knockdowns and earn himself what looked to be a knock out against Harly Kilfian. Unfortunately, for John Moxey the knock out was taken away as he was disqualified for ignoring the referee’s instructions as he continued to throw punches in and outside the ropes at the defenseless Harley.

Main Event

Gary “Stone Cold” Eyer vs David “Relentless” Laque

In the main event the crowded Grandma’s Sports Garden was treated to a six round battle that came down to a very close judges decision. With the three judges scoring the fight 57-55, 57-55, and 56-56 Duluth native Gary “Stone Cold” Eyer was declared the winner.

Grandma’s Sports Garden played host to amateur and professional boxing on February 1st. As the warm-up to the two professional fights the crowd saw amateur boxers ranging from young kids in the 60 lbs class up to seasoned fighters in the heavier weight classes.

During the time period of Dec 29, 2012 – Jan 9, 2013 I participated in the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog Brrrrdathon/Photothon. The non-profit organization Friends of Sax-Zim Bog is hosting the Photothon in the boreal forest of northeastern Minnesota & Northwestern Wisconsin. It is held to help raise funds with the goal to conserve and educate about the delicate and vanishing habitat of Sax-Zim Bog. At the end of the 12 days entrants submitted their 10 best photos for judging. Jan 12th was the compilation and awards. I found out I took 2nd with one of my male Pine Grosbeak photos also scoring 2nd highest. Here’s the gallery for the 10 photos that made up my submission. The photos were taken in Sax-Zim Bog as well as around our house. I didn’t get to photography some of the bird species I wanted to get but overall was happy with what I got.

Well the evening of Dec 13th/early morning of Dec 14th brought us the annual Geminid Meteor Shower. Here in Northern Minnesota we were blessed with clear skies and temperatures in the single digits. Over the course of the night I was able to photograph nearly 50 meteors and saw many more streak across the sky. Despite the cold temperature it was fun being out there to see all the meteors.

Was the first Sunday in October for what had be come a true sign of fall, photographing the Twin Cities Marathon as part of the Competitive Image crew. Together the crew took over 12,000 photos. Unlike the last few years, today had the finish line coverage tasks. Here’s a few photos from the chilly morning in the Twin Cities.

The Sunday show of the 2012 Duluth Air Show was greeted by blue sunny skies instead of the rainy skies on Saturday. The feature act, the Royal Canadian Air Force team the Canadian Snowbirds performed a wonderful show using nine aircraft in various formations, loops, and crossing patterns. The Army’s Golden Knights skydiving team started off the show by bringing in the flags for the United States and Canada. There were two different acrobatic plane performances. A display of WWII era planes with a B25 and a P-51C painted with the “Red Tails” that the Tuskegee Airman flew with. The Heritage flight for this year saw a P-51D lead the formation with an F16 flying the slot position and a pair of F4 Phantoms as the wingmen. A Mig-21 put on a short show of the airplane Vietnam era pilots saw a lot of. Local company Cirrus showed off their new jet aircraft as well. All in all it was a good day of flying for all involved. Growing up around the Air Force and the Thunderbirds, I was finally able to see the Snowbirds perform. I would gladly see them again as they didn’t disappoint.

A few photos from the first annual Superior Man Triathlon held in downtown Duluth. The athlete’s jumped in the harbor off the Vista Star for the swim leg, the cycling leg took them through downtown on their way to Two Harbors before returning on scenic highway 61, and the final running leg saw them do multiple laps around Canal and Bayfront Parks.

Overnight was supposed to be the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower. Unforunately, clouds started moving in shortly after 1am. I did manage to get one decent photo of a meteor passing through the sky. In total saw about 25 meteors for the two and half hours I laid outside staring at the night sky.
