Nature Valley Grand Prix – Stage 6, Stillwater, MN | Moses Images | Matthew Moses
Well the 6th and final stage of the Nature Valley Grand Prix came to a close. The women’s race saw Carmen Small’s Optum team deliver her to the finish as the Nature Valley Grand Prix Champion. Carmen and her team managed to keep in her yellow throughout the entire event and it came as no surprise that Optum also took the team title as well as, the Sport Beans Queen of the Hill competition won by teammate Jade Wilcoxson. On the men’s side Mother Nature again brought rain to the event with a light rain turned to a steady downpour as the race came to an end. Tom Zirbel keep all his competitors close and is now able to call himself the Nature Valley Grand Prix Champion. His team did a lot of work at the front of the race and it showed with Optum earning the overall team title. You couldn’t really ask for more from the Optum team after taking home the race win and team win for both the women and men.
One additional award was given out before the start of the women’s event. It is the Carla Swart Sportsmanship Award. The recipient of the award is voted on by the women’s peloton and in Stillwater that rider receives the award in honor of the teamwork Carla Swart displayed during her tragically short career. The 2012 winner chosen by her peers was Anna Barensfeld of the Optum team.

Mother Nature finally let a road race happen. Today was the road stage in Menomonie, WI. The day saw periods of both sun and rain during the course of the two races. Tom Zirbel took back the race lead after a strong performance in a breakaway group that didn’t get caught. Carmen Small’s Optum team did very well defending her race leaders jersey by keep the field together throughout the day. The margins are still close so we’ll see what happens on the tough Stillwater course tomorrow.

Nature Valley Grand Prix – Stage 4, Minneapolis, MN | Moses Images | Matthew Moses
After stage 3′s cancellation due to weather, stage 4 brought us to the Uptown Criterium held in Minneapolis. It is a fast crit course with lots of room to move around. The women’s race saw Optum working to keep thing under control and along the way Carmen Small even added to her lead. Theresa Cliff Ryan (ExergyTWENTY12) added another stage victory and holds an 8 point lead in the Exergy Sprint Competition. After having lost the leader’s jersey Wednesday night, the men’s Optum team played the aggressor with lots of attacks as the Kenda team tried to keep control. Optum put Michael Creed and Jesse Anthony into a four man break that looked promising. However, Kenda with the help of Bissel was able to pull the break back setting up for a sprint finish which Brad Huff of Jelly Belly won with Alejandro Borrajo and Frank Pipp rounding out the podium.
Nature Valley Grand Prix – Stage 2, Saint Paul, MN | Moses Images | Matthew Moses
Stage 2 of the Nature Valley Grand Prix took us to downtown Saint Paul for criteriums. The races were fast and breaks were hard to come by. In both races the Optum teams attempted to control the race. For the women things worked out with Carmen Small remaining yellow. Unfortunately, the men found it a bitter harder to control at the end and Tom Zirbel’s race leaders’s jersey was passed to John Murphy of the Kenda squad who sits 1 second ahead thanks to time bonuses.
Next up Cannon Falls…
